Erland Cooper will score the Young Vic’s staging of Portia Coughlan, the 1996 play by Irish playwright Marina Carr, for its run in the autumn of 2020. Directed by Caroline Byrne, the event marks the play’s return to the UK stage. Erland will work with cast and crew to produce a score that reflects the knotty landscapes of the play’s Irish setting. The play runs at the Young Vic in London (SE1 8LZ) from 16th September till 31st October 2020. Click here for more information.
In a new commission from the Manchester Collective, Erland Cooper enters a dialogue spanning six decades with ornithologist-cum-composer Olivier Messiaen, delivering his own portraits of the birds that influenced the classic piano work Catalogue d’oiseaux. Renowned as a notoriously complex piece for both performer and listener, live performances are rare, making the programme particularly special. Erland will produce a series of musical vignettes that interpolate the thirteen movements, each acting as an anchor to the present day and reflecting the musical and geographical landscapes that influence Erland’s own composition. It premieres at St John the Evangelist in Leeds (LS2 8JD) on 10th and 11th October 2019. Click here for more information.
NEST was an immersive sound and light sculpture created by Erland Cooper in collaboration with Marshmallow Laser Feast as part of the opening celebrations for London’s first Borough of Culture in January 2019. The installation consisted of beams of light in a ring that create ever-evolving natural forms in the night sky, driven by a score composed by Erland that included the voices of over 1000 Walthamstow residents. NEST was installed in Lloyd Park behind the William Morris Gallery in Walthamstow, London from 11th to 13th January 2019. Click here for more information.
